MAMATA SHANKAR

Daughter of Uday and Amala Shankar, wife of Chandrodoy Ghosh, niece of Pt. Ravi Shankar and sister of Ananda Shankar, Mamata is an accomplished dancer, choreographer and actress. Having her basic training in Bharatanatyam, Manipuri and Kathakali apart from Uday Shankar style of dance at the UDAY SHANKAR INDIA CULTURE CENTRE in Calcutta under the guidance of her mother Smt. Amala Shankar, Mamata, following the footsteps of her father have imbibed that rare sense of choreography, which apart from being highly imaginative is truly Indian in spirit, --- " a chip of the old block !" comment the press.

Mamata proved her acting prowess in several films which received national and international recognition. She has acted with elan in films directed by Mr. Satyajit Ray, Mr. Mrinal Sen, Mr. Gautam Ghosh and Mr. Budhadev Dasgupta. She had the unique opportunity of being chosen as the heroine for the last three films of Mr. Satyajit Ray, namely "GANASHATRU" ( Enemy of the people ), "SHAKHA PRASHAKHA" ( Branches & Twigs ) and "AGANTUK" (The Stranger ).
